Mike’s drumming is sometimes what I like the very best in the recordings. His turn-arounds and flourishes are so tasteful and add just the right sauce. Like on “By the Window,” he plants little figures at the ends of the phrases that are just perfect. Funny thing about Mike: about five years ago, he moved into an apartment where he is not supposed to be playing drums, for noise reasons. So when we started on this CD, he had not sat behind a drum kit in a very long time. But he walked in, picked up the sticks, and just killed it.
His formal bio would say that Mike first picked up drumsticks at age 10 and soon developed a taste for unusual meters, listening to Genesis and Rush. Today, he draws on a wide range of classical and popular music.
